FAQs About POCUS

What is POCUS?

POCUS stands for Point-of-Care Ultrasound. It allows clinicians to obtain and interpret real-time images in the patient's presence.

What can POCUS detect?

POCUS allows the cardiologist to assess heart function, identify abnormalities in size, shape, stiffness, squeezing and valve function, chamber and wall dimensions, and detect issues in various organs.

How is POCUS performed?

Similar to a physical exam, POCUS uses ultrasound equipment to visualize internal organs and structures in real time.

Why is POCUS valuable?

POCUS aids in diagnosing and managing patient conditions promptly. It allows the cardiologist to identify abnormalities and take immediate action, such as treatment adjustments, requesting more advanced imaging, or referrals.

What's the point of POCUS?

POCUS provides real-time insights into human anatomy and physiology, aiding in diagnosing conditions and monitoring treatment effectiveness. It offers a window into the human body's health. The body's physiology changes as we age, and various diseases or ailments are addressed. These changes and possible abnormalities can often be observed with POCUS, allowing the cardiologist to immediately implement an action plan to treat the patient successfully.

What abnormalities can POCUS identify?

POCUS can detect abnormalities in heart pumping and valve function, aorta structure, liver/gall bladder, kidney, bladder, masses in the abdomen/pelvis area, abnormal carotid arteries and other arteries, masses in the neck, and abnormal fluid collections or masses throughout the body.
